1. Manufacturing process of the base
To improve the thermal conductivity of the heat sink base, selecting materials with high thermal conductivity coefficient is one aspect, but on the other hand, it is also necessary to solve the problem of the tight connection between heat sources such as CPU and the heat sink base. According to the law of heat conduction, with a fixed material, the conductivity is directly proportional to the contact area and inversely proportional to the contact distance. The larger the contact area, the faster the heat can be dissipated, but for the CPU, its Die is fixed, so the bonding distance is more important.
Common bottom treatment processes include:
Wire drawing process (grinding)
The wire drawing process is also the most commonly used bottom treatment process. When drawing, use a tool with a certain roughness and hardness on the surface, such as sandpaper, file, etc., to perform unidirectional, repeated, or rotational friction on the surface of the object. By using the cutting effect of the tool's rough surface friction, remove the protrusions on the treated surface; Of course, smoothing out protrusions can also cause scratches on the originally flat surface. Therefore, a gradual process from coarse to fine should be adopted to gradually reduce the roughness of the treated surface.
Disc milling process (cutting)
The disc milling process refers to the process of fixing the bottom surface of the radiator and cutting the surface of the radiator with a high-speed rotating tool. The tool always rotates in the same plane, so the bottom surface cut is very flat. Similar to the wire drawing process, the finer the cutting tools used in the disc milling process, the higher the flatness of the bottom surface cut. The manufacturing cost of disc milling process is relatively high, but compared to wire drawing, it only requires two or three processes, which is more time-saving and the effect is also relatively ideal.

The main process used for leveling the bottom surface of heat dissipation fins in CNC machine tools is still milling. But unlike traditional disc milling, the cutting tools of CNC milling machines can be precisely controlled by a microcontroller to determine the relative distance between them and the heat sink. After the tool contacts the bottom surface of the heat sink, the two move horizontally relative to each other, which can cut the untreated part left by the tool gap in traditional disc milling to achieve a complete flat effect. No subsequent processing is allowed to achieve a mirror like effect, and the flatness can be less than 0.001mm.
Other processes
In addition to the above, there are other processes for treating the bottom of the radiator, such as polishing. However, relatively speaking, polishing treatment is more focused on the aesthetics of the radiator, without significant improvement in the flatness of the radiator bottom surface, and the processing cost is relatively high.
