★The compliance of die-casting parts with die-casting processes is a guarantee to prevent the occurrence of defective products and to produce them in large quantities at low cost. Good die casting design can ensure the lifespan of the mold, production reliability, and high yield.

★The design principles of die-casting parts are: correctly selecting the materials of die-casting parts; Reasonably determine the dimensional accuracy of die castings; Try to distribute the wall thickness evenly; Avoid sharp corners.

★Die castings can be divided into two categories according to usage requirements. One type is parts that bear large loads or have high relative motion speeds. The inspection items include size, surface quality, chemical composition, and mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation, hardness). The other type is other parts, which are inspected for dimensions, surface quality, and chemical composition.

Cast-in inserts in casting design

Metal or non-metallic inserts can be cast into die-casting parts. The materials used for casting inserts are mostly copper, steel, pure iron, etc. The role of embedded castings has several aspects.

① Strengthen the strength, wear resistance, conductivity, and insulation of certain parts of die-casting parts, such as casting steel parts into aluminum to improve strength, casting sapphire to improve wear resistance, casting insulation materials to reduce costs and improve insulation, and casting iron cores to endow magnetic conductivity.

② Remove overly complex cavities and concave cavities on the inner side that cannot be diecasted.

③ Eliminate hot spots and avoid looseness.

④ Use low melting point metal die-casting instead of precious metals, such as using high silicon aluminum instead of bronze. ⑤ Many small castings can be combined to replace partial assembly.

 

Precautions for designing die-casting parts with inserts:

① After casting, the casting should be tightly wrapped by the base metal and should not become loose;

② The base metal of the casting around the insert should not be less than 1.5-2mm, and the large castings should be thickened;

③ There should be no electrochemical corrosion between the insert and the metal substrate of the casting. In this case, a protective layer can be added to the surface of the insert;

④ The enclosed part on the insert should not have clear corners or edges to avoid cracking of the casting;

⑤ Castings with inserts should avoid heat treatment to avoid differences in volume changes caused by different phase transitions between two metals, which can cause the inserts to loosen inside the casting;

⑥ The insert should be able to meet the positioning requirements and various tolerance fit requirements placed in the model;

⑦ The shape of the insert and its position on the casting should facilitate placement during die-casting production;

⑧The embedded parts should not be too far away from the gate to avoid loose fusion. If it is necessary to stay away, the pouring temperature should be appropriately increased;

⑨The embedded parts should be cleaned to remove dirt such as oil, ash, rust, etc., and preheated;

⑩Insert parts with threads, leaving 1.5~2mm on the outer edge after embedding. When the insert is pressed straight or patterned, the groove width should not be less than 2mm and the depth should not be less than 1.5mm.
